Matariki, Book Fair and Grandparents Day

A crazy busy week 9 for Waiau Pa! Three major events all coincided for an epically exciting and fun-filled week.

MATARIKI

Our students all celebrated Matariki this year in their whanau groups. Each Whanau rotated through 4 activities; cooking fry bread, weaving putiputi (flax flowers) and learning knucklebones, adding their personally decorated feather to their whanau Kākahu and learning Mahi Whai (string games), and finally learning some basic kapa haka commands, movements and rakau songs.

It was wonderful to see the older students embracing the idea of Tuakana-Teina, By looking after, and supporting the younger students during this learning time. It was also nice to see the older ones learning off some of our younger ones - reminding us all that everyone has something to gift.

Our Kapa Haka groups have been working hard and performed at both the Grandparents Day assembly as well as the Kauri Syndicate Assembly. They all performed with pride and captured the audience with their well practised sets of Waiata. Well done to all of you including Matua Wi and Mrs Lunjevich for all your hard work.

BOOK WEEK AND GRANDPARENTS DAY

The ‘Book Fair’ ran all week in the Library. Thanks to Mrs Edwards and the Librarians for all their hard work. It was awesome to see kids getting excited about books (and stationary…) and this Author's personal favourites ‘Unicorns are the WORST!’ written by Alex Willian, and “Who pooed in my loo?” by Emma L. Adams went down a treat even with our senior students.

During this time, the PTA held a competition for book posters and bookmarks. The entries were all of such a high standard, the judging was very tough, but in the end winners were chosen and these students received some wonderful prizes. Well done to all who entered! Winning designs can be viewed on the glass cases outside the resource room.

Finally, Our Grandparents' Day was a HUGE success. So many grandparents showed up to support their mokopuna and join them in their final Matariki rotations. It was great to see the love shared, and the knowledge and stories passed down as our grandparents reminisced about their own experiences with weaving, making fry bread and playing games. Thank you to ALL who made this very special week a success. We look forward to our next whanau gathering with you.

#PINKSHIRTDAY - SAY NO TO BULLYING!

The students rolled in on Friday morning of Week 3, donning every shade of pink you can imagine. Unicorn horns, tutus, cowboy hats and even work socks in pink brightened the chilly, grey day as the students showed support against bullying. It was awesome to see so many of the students (and staff) getting involved, enjoying themselves, and showcasing some personality.
